2011 World Cup Triumphs – an SMS that did the rounds

2011 World Cup - an SMS that did the rounds

Boria Majumdar reveals an SMS that did the rounds. When talking about the unknown stories of the 2011 World Cup, he disclosed the role of an SMS.

We all know that in 2011, India won the World Cup defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the finals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India became the first country to win the Cricket World Cup final on home soil.

The 2011 World Cup is considered to be one that had the most electrifying matches. One among them was the match between India and England that took place in Bengaluru. Both teams scored more than 330 runs.

At the end of that tie-game, when Indian players were in the dressing room, an SMS was doing the rounds. Indian players got it soon after the match against England. The SMS read as follows – Mahendra Singh Dhoni as Captain, if there was a tied match early on in the tournament, Dhoni would go on to win the tournament.

Boria spoke to three players and they corroborated it. At that point, no one knew about it. But later it was proved to be true. India went on to become the World Champions for the second time. 28 years later on the home soil.

The 28 years was a big deal for our Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar. He said, “ This is the moment I wanted to live for. That is the moment that changed things. In the year 1983, I saw Kapil Dev holding that beautiful trophy. Since I was a kid, I was dreaming about it and was trying to get that. I don’t think anything gets better than that.”
