Yuzvendra Chahal becomes first Indian bowler to take 300 wickets in T20 cricket; check reactions
During Rajasthan Royals’ opening match of IPL 2023 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Yuzvendra Chahal became the first Indian to hit the 300 wickets mark in T20 cricket.
The IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals on Sunday went in favour of the latter, thanks to RR’s star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Leading the team towards victory, he took not one but four important wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, and skipper Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Chahal, who is India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, effectively dismantled the SRH batting line-up to return with figures of 4-0-17-4. With this, he also achieved a major feat by becoming the first Indian bowler to complete 300 wickets in T20 cricket, a number that has left cricket fans across the country the happiest.
The 32-year-old bowler played his 265th match in the shortest format on Sunday and now has 303 wickets to his name after knocking off Brook on the last ball of the 7th over of the SRH innings.
The fourth match of the IPL 2023 was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
The year has been wonderful for Yuzvendra Chahal who this month in January surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar as India’s leading wicket-taker in the shortest format of the game at the international stage. After making a name for himself at the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chahal has done exceptionally well for his new franchise.
Yuzvendra Chahal who now widened the gap among the Indian bowlers as he stands at the top with 302 wickets to his name in T20 Cricket. The bowler has been in exceptional form this year and it was evident in his performance against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The bowler has once again displayed his skill and ability in the ongoing match, as he picked the likes of Harry Brook, Mayank Agarwal and Adil Rashid.
16th bowler to achieve a milestone of 300 scalps
Chahal has now become the 16th bowler to achieve a milestone of 300 scalps in the shortest format.He has also become just the 8th spinner to attain this feat.Meanwhile, Chahal’s RR team-mate R Ashwin has 288 scalps in T20s (including today’s game) and veteran Piyush Chawla follows suit with 276 scalps in the 20-over format.
Joint-second-highest wickets in IPL history
Chahal is now the leading wicket-taker amongst spinners in the IPL. With four scalps in the match versus SRH, Chahal has raced to 170 wickets.He steered clear of Amit Mishra (166). Chahal is also the joint-second-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, equaling Lasith Malinga (170). Dwayne Bravo (181) is above him.Notably, Chahal won the IPL 2022 Purple Cap for the most wickets (27).

Chahal is the leading wicket-taker for India in T20Is. He has claimed 91 scalps at 24.68.Chahal has two four-wicket hauls for India, besides a fifer. His best spell is 6/25.Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only other bowler to take 90-plus wickets for India in the format (90). Chahal is one of the 13 bowlers in international cricket to claim 90-plus wickets.
