Devon Conway stars with 77 as Chennai Super Kings defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets

Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad : Devon Conway struck a fine unbeaten half-century and shared an 87-run stand with opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad as Chennai Super Kings defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets in an Indian Premier League match on Friday.

Chasing 134/7, the New Zealander hit an unbeaten 57-ball 77, while Gaikwad scored 35 off 30 deliveries as CSK scored 138 for 3 in 18.4 overs at the M Chidambaram Stadium. Earlier, India spinner Ravindra Jadeja accounted for three crucial wickets to restrict SRH to a below-par score.

Jadeja dismissed opener Abhishek Sharma (34), Rahul Tripathi (21) and Mayank Agarwal (2) as the 34-year-old emerged the most successful bowler for his side with figures of 3/22 in his four overs.

MS Dhoni says

Whatever said and done, last phase of my career, important to enjoy it. It feels good to be here. They have given a lot of love and affection. They always stay late to listen to me. You need time to pick his action (Pathirana). We have seen with Malinga – someone who has an awkward action and who is very consistent with line and length – it’s difficult to score off him. I was hesitant to bat second. Had the feeling there won’t be much dew. Overall the middle overs was the setup. Fast bowlers bowled very well in the last few overs. I always tell them that first preference of field setting is with you. Still they didn’t give me best catch. I felt it was a fantastic catch. Long time back I still remember one game – Rahul Dravid was keeping and he caught one like that. Definitely old, can’t shy away from that.

Devon Conway was seen doing wicketkeeping drills in training and MS Dhoni has been seen walking with a slight limp after games due to his dodgy knee. If he is not fit enough to play, Conway might take the gloves. CSK don’t have a designated vice-captain and it will be interesting to see who fills in for Dhoni the captain, in case he misses out. Ben Stokes is also back training in the nets and should be available for this game. Whether he makes the XI or not will depend on the conditions on offer.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have underwhelmed so far in this tournament. Mayank Agarwal finally got some runs in the last game, but he didn’t get them at a good enough pace. Umran Malik (ER 11.09), T Natarajan (ER 10.56), and Washington Sundar (ER 9.27) have all been disappointing with the ball.

If the Chennai wicket plays like it normally does, they might think about bringing in an additional international spinner in the form of Akeal Hossein or Adil Rashid in place of Marco Jansen.

Aiden Markram: Never nice to lose, disappointed. Let ourselves dow with the bat. Lacked partnerships of substance. It wasn’t a 130-odd wicket, more closer to 160. Tough to get momentum if you don’t have partnerships. They bowled well in the middle overs, didn’t give us much to score of. We knew their spinners will play a big role, it was more about each person having his own plan to counter that. The guys had their plans but we couldn’t get it right tonight ultimately. We need some wins now, have to see how we can get better with the bat. Proud how the bowlers stuck it out and took the game deep. Gonna take 1-2 guys to put their hands up, hopefully we can get it right the next game.
